When to Eat After Your Workout?

11 January 2009 3 Comments

A friend of mine was just asking about when to eat after her workout so I thought I would make it a post.

If your exercise program is less than 45 minutes, your daily meals should provide enough for what your body needs. But, if you train longer than 45 minutes or if you are training for a big event, it is good idea to eat enough carbs and protein within one hour of your workout. This helps your body to recover properly. Experts advise about 15-30 grams of carbs and 6 grams of protein. Your body uses the carbs to help restore muscle glycogen and adding the protein helps speed the process.

Also, don’t forget the water! Drink a glass of water an hour or so before your workout and again after your workout. You can also sip water throughout your workout if you’d like, which keeps you hydrated, and also helps burn more calories.

After I workout, I cannot eat anything until after I’ve had a shower.

Otherwise, I start to feel bad.

I do drink a lot of water to hold me over, though.
