Slim Tip of the Week – Use Smaller Plates

29 June 2010 3 Comments

At your next backyard BBQ, choose the smallest available plate. This will automatically ensure you take smaller portions. You won’t feel cheated, though, because your mind will see a full dish. Researchers at Cornell University estimate that routinely eating off plates with a diameter 2 inches smaller than usual can reduce calorie consumption by 22%.

I’ve been doing this for a few weeks now. Instead of using a regular sized plate, I use small dessert plates or coffee cup plates (is there a word for those?). It’s made a huge difference in how I see portions.

    Hi There!
First time visiting! I love all the info you share with us bloggers and readers.

I also use smaller plates, usually salad plates, it is the perfect way to maintain balanced portions!

Thanks for the advices you share.

I completely agree. I have two sizes of plates. When I eat a bag of steamed broccoli on the big plate it seems like I haven’t eaten that much. On the small plate it looks like I’m going overbooard. Definitely a tactic worth trying.
