Sitting on your Butt will KILL YOU!

work-exercise-ballA recent article in Women’s Healthy Magazine reports that Americans are spending far too much time on our rear ends. Of course, I am writing this while sitting, but luckily, I’ve had my workout, in addition to sledding with the kids and cleaning the house, so I figure a little sit down time is OK. According to the article, excessive sitting can lead to obesity, heart disease, depression, and diabetes and has opened up a new field of research called “inactivity physiology”. This is basically a field that studies too much sitting.

Luckily, research finds that non-exercise related activity can make a huge difference in the number of calories burned and help fight the detrimental affects of too much sitting. The research suggests doing more with your body, like housework, pacing, or even standing instead of sitting, can make a big difference. We need to make every effort to move our bodies to keep our metabolism from crashing so the pounds don’t come creeping up on us.

So, get up and keep moving. If you have a desk job, look into a standing desk section or a yoga ball instead of a desk chair. If you are alone in your office on calls, pace back and forth instead of sitting with a cup of coffee. If you are a mother running after young children, like I am, be thankful of the chance to get up and move. You are doing yourself a big favor every time that you do.

I love the idea of a Yoga ball instead of a desk chair! I can imagine with my kids running off with it all the time though-LOL!

Another option Is to get an adjustable height desk, which lets you go back and forth between sitting and standing. GeekDesk makes the most cost-effective one I’ve seen (I bought one and really like it), but Steelcase and Workrite are well-known brands as well.

AH, good point about the kids with the ball. They do have chairs with a yoga ball built in so that kids can’t just roll them away.
