Perfect SUCKS!

10 January 2012 13 Comments

At age 43, I’m a proud mother of two fantastic kids. Married to an amazing husband and trying my best to keep fit and healthy while trying to help others do the same. As some of you know, I had a fantastic transformation with P90X and was even featured on their infomercial for my results.

Well, that was nearly 3 years ago now and I’ve hit a few speed bumps since then including two injuries and a few illnesses along with a recent relapse of depression and anxiety. I few years back I wrote about giving up on my perfectionist tendencies. I was concerned that my “slip” in my fitness focus would make me less credible. But, now I am proud to be out of the closet with my fitness failures, sharing them with my readers in addition to my successes.

Besides, PERFECT SUCKS! Don’t strive for it. It does not exist. I was doing a Jillian Michaels workout today and she said it herself. It really rang true with me. She also said something like “Trasformation is not an end result. It is something you do with your actions each and every day.” This is so true. While I agree that setting a goals are good, don’t see it as an ending “transformation.” Work toward transforming yourself each and every day in different ways.

THIS is the new me. THIS is what I am aiming for. I am not striving to be perfect, but to better myself, even if just a little, each and every day. We’ll keep working together to be stronger, more fit, flexible, health and happy. I’m here for you and so many of you are here for me as well. On with the journey! SCREW PERFECT! It’s a myth, a legend of air-brushed models. We are REAL people and real people work hard, fail, succeed and help one another. Let’s do this!

Hi Jenn.. I too have struggled with PERFECTION, Depression, anxiety and my own control issues… and have also had an EPIPHANY! Well said! I feel like you do and agree that perfection is not reachable. I think we should aim to get better every day and keep transforming ourselves but not get frustrated for not achieving perfection.

Great post and great comments!! I too have struggled with striving for perfection. And you are right it doesn’t work. I think it doesn’t work because the standard we are striving for is false. I do my best when I focus on doing the best things for me and my body and really loving myself. Which means giving my body things that taste good but are healthy and contribute to a feeling a well being. I wish I could say I always do this but I strive for progress not perfection! Thanks again for a great piece! I apologize for not following you before, I just found you on voiceBoks!! I’m gladly following your site, and on FB and twitter! Thanks again!

I think I recognize you from that infomercial!

You’re right about just accomplishing things slowly and everyday. It really is the long haul, and all of those little things that you do that add up over time. Those major fitness routines are great, but you get worn out, and you have to find something that you can do until you die. At least that’s what I think;)

I love your site and will have to come back after I have my third and last child this year. After the second one child I just couldn’t get the baby weight off like the first and I had this image of what a perfect me was suppose to look like for my kids and my husband (soon to be). But never thought of it for myself, as perfection is the worst thing you can put on yourself since it does not exist. You are a great inspiration and your post is so true.

Hey Jenn! Good for you for giving up the perfectionism. It is a hard thing to do. And I really believe that we shouldn’t have an “end” goal. Because, then what? It goes along with the whole “it’s the journey, NOT the destination” thing. I was wondering if you’d like to do a guest-post on one of my blogs. I’d like to start featuring over 40 year olds who are (awesome!) on my blog. It’s called Fit, Fun and Fashionable over 40. Would love to feature you, if you’d like. You can message me through voiceboks

Not only does perfect suck it also isn’t very interesting either. I find beauty in imperfection.

Great post! Imperfection is beautiful and so are the remains of the babies that we carry. A healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be a runway body. You look fabulous on the bikini picture, by the way! Congrats on a healthy lifestyle and for embracing imperfection! Glad to have found you! Tracy

Great post!!! It is so true and I see it in myself…we all strive to perfect and it is just not possible….we can only be the best we can and sometimes we have to cut ourselves some slack!!
